Exciting New Summer Menu

Our Chef's blackboard specialities will change on a regular basis to give you the excuse to keep coming back. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates.

Art at Ke-Monate

From this month on, Ke-Monate is starting an exciting new venture. We will be featuring one or two talented artists works in our tasting centre or conference room on a monthly basis. So when you are here please feel free to go downstairs or ask the floor manager to view the pieces.
This month our featured artist is PC van Rensburg.

PC van Rensburg was born in Cape Town in 1955 and studied at the School of Architecture, University of Pretoria. He has been a practising architect for the past 30 years. As an artist he does large oil on canvas paintings and has participated in numerous group art exhibitions in Cape Town over the last 12 years. Several of his works have been auctioned for charity.

Chef Natalia's Recipe of the Month

My love affair with bread and butter pudding did not start until I started working in the UK, where this dish was a big crowd pleaser. The possibilities of this simple, but delicious dessert fired up my imagination and it did not take me long to start experimenting with different flavours, for example citrus or mixed berry – but I really hit the taste jackpot when I created my chocolate bread and butter pudding. My secret is a sprinkle of hot chocolate powder in between the slices of bread. Simple and effective.

Wine Tasting and Dinner Evening for August

Our August and September wine tasting and dinner evenings will unfortunately have to be cancelled due to the fact that, our speaker, Dr Charl van Teijlingen is having a back operation. He will be back for the October tasting. We wish all the best and a speedy recovery.

Warm Up at Ke-Monate this winter

Cold? Miserable? Hiding away under your duvet…? Come out to Ke-Monate! We have a fireplace, delicious food and wine which is sure to warm you up and take you to your happy place…

Wine Tasting & Dinner Evening

Ever hear the term "Cracking a bottle of Port"? At our June wine tasting and dinner evening we did just that. Charl van Teijlingen (local winemaster and tasting presenter) has special Port cracking tongs he brought along to show us how it is done.

The tongs were heated in the fireplace until extremely hot and we all watched in fascination as he clasped the bottle around the neck and kept it there for a while…will it burst, crack or break..? Then he casually took a damp cloth and simply snapped the top bit of the neck off!! The only ‘downside’to this method of opening a bottle of Port, is that you will have to finish it… dear oh dear! :)

Due to the school holidays, we will not be having our monthly wine tasting and dinner club this month, but it will continue in August. Be sure not to miss it! Also please be warned that these evenings are becoming increasingly popular, so early reservations are essential.

Chef Natalia’s Recipe of the Month

This Lamb curry recipe was taught to me by a chef that I met when I was working at the British Boutique Best Western Hotel. On my first day, he told me to make the best lamb curry that I knew. Keen to be challenged, I said sure, no problem. After he tasted it, he said it was good, but missing a key ingredient.

I added that specific ingredient and to my surprise, the curry was not just better, it was magnificent! I will not reveal what the key was but I’ll let you have a clue…it’s an item on this recipe’s list of ingredients. If you can’t figure it out, you’ll just going to have to come taste it at the restaurant!

Happy cooking!!

April Recap

April started off with the Easter weekend and the traditional Easter rain. The plan was to do an Easter egg hunt, but with all the rain we opted to just give out the Easter eggs instead (the kids did not seem too bothered). Everyone stayed inside and enjoyed warm food and delicious red wine to chase the autumn chill away.

On the 14th we had two weddings at Ke-Monate. We would like to wish George and Gail Chaney as well as Hanna and John Weber all the best for the future, may it be a long and happy one.

Wine tasting and dinner evening

On the 24th of April we had our Pinotage tasting. This evening started with Charl’s interesting power point presentation about the history and development of Pinotage in South Africa. Charl took us on a journey back to 1925, when Prof. Abraham Izak Perold created Pinotage while working for the University of Stellenbosch, to our current day.

Our evening’s tasting started with a unique experience of tasting a two and a half month old Pinotage, which had only recently been placed in the barrels. Afterwards we had the honour of tasting Meerendal’s very first bottled Pinotage – A 1969 followed by Kanonkop’s 1989.

Our next wine tasting and dinner evening will be on the 22nd May 2012. The very talented Charl van Teijlingen will be discussing the distinctive taste of Cabernet Sauvignon. We will be serving a beautifully prepared three course meal afterwards that is specially designed to complement the wine cultivar you will taste that evening.

You can contact Marianne at cellardoor@ke-monate.co.za for reservations

Vino vino vino!

We are very excited to launch our new wine list in the restaurant as well as the tasting centre. You can look forward to, just to name a few, Phizante Kraal, Maison de Teijger and Hermit on the Hill wines from the Boutique Wine Association of Durbanville.

Remember, the tasting centre is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 17:00. You can book a tasting for large groups by contacting Marianne, cellardoor@ke-monate.co.za

Boutique wine cellar – Home of Signal Gun wines

MJ de Wit, our wine maker, started making our wines in 2006 as a hobby, over the years it developed into an ever growing business. He and his wife, Estani decided that they needed a launch pad for their lovely Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc wines, so they started with project Ke-monate. In 2010 this beautiful restaurant with its wine tasting centre, was opened during the month of October.

The Signal Gun wines form part of the Boutique Wine Association of Durbanville's list of exclusive wines. When we opened our wine tasting centre we decided to invite the other boutique wine makers of the Durbanville Valley. This meant that we can offer you, our guest a wider range exclusive boutique wines at Ke-monate. We host the great wines of Klein Roosboom, Eureka, Westerdale, Hermit on the Hill, Welbeloond and Nomada.

Our wine cellar is open on Fridays, Saturdays (10:00 to 17:00) and Sundays (10:00 to 15:00)
